About the Licking County 4-H Band
History:
In 1948, Lenora McLeish had a dream: to organize a band for young musicians of Licking County that would broaden their musical talents, be a wholesome activity for the summer months, and bring another performing group to the area. She and her husband, John, did just that in the Toboso area. The first band had 37 members. The following year, Mr. Krieter, the 4-H extension agent at the time, asked them to take the band county wide, thus forming the Licking County 4-H Band.
About the band:
Beginning with the first Wednesday of March and continuing through the end of May, weekly practices are held at Legend Elementary on Evans Boulevard in Newark, Ohio. These twelve weeks are followed by a week of camp held at Camp Ohio. While at camp, band members practice approximately seven hours a day. Additional activities are organized to help the members get to know each other and form friendships which will last for the years to come, even after they have retired from the band.
Concerts begin immediately following camp, at least two per week. The concerts continue through the months of June, July, and August including a week at the Hartford Fair. There the band serves as the official music of the fair and plays two to three concerts a day.
While at the fair, the members are housed in the Majestic Eagle, the band's dorm. TARA, the band's amphitheater that was built by members, parents, and friends of the band, is the site of many fair concerts.
An all-volunteer staff of advisors and the director, Jane Copenhefer, oversee the operations of the band. In addition; council members, the Advisory Board, and a slate of officers lend their leadership. Council members are selected by their peers based on five characteristics: Dependability, Maturity, Honesty, Leadership, and Character. After serving on council for two years, council members then become part of the Advisory Board where they continue to be recognized for their commitment to the operations of the band.
Operating funds for the band are generated through three activities known as socials. Here, parents from assigned areas of Licking County prepare, sell, and serve homemade food prior to and during each social's concerts. Much of the band's success must be accredited to the parents who put forth a great amount of time, support, and financial contributions on behalf of the band.
All concerts are open to the public and admission is free.
